BLACK COTTONWOOD
Populus trichocarpa
Black Cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) is a beautiful and ecologically important riparian tree found throughout western North America. This species has beautiful dark-green leaves with fuzzy white undersides and can grow to a considerable height, making it an excellent option as a street tree, especially when planted in areas with supplemental irrigation. Plant black cottonwood in a sunny location with low to moderate-draining soil and water heavily upon establishment. Photos by Mel Letterman.
